Integrated Land-Sea Toolkit

Dear EBM Tools Listserve Members:
As the new EBM Tools Training Coordinator, I have been talking to
coastal resource managers, planners, and outreach education
organizations to assess the needs for tools training. It has become
apparent to me that there is confusion not only on the capabilities and
functions of specific tools, but also on how these tools relate to the
planning and management work for which these managers are responsible.
To help bridge that gap, I am working with the rest of the EBM Tools
Network staff to assemble specific "toolkits" that connect key EBM
topical issues (marine spatial planning, coastal hazards, climate
change) to specific tools.
One topical area that has generated interest are tools that help to
visualize the integration of terrestrial and marine geophysical,
ecological and socioeconomic processes. These "Integrated Land-Sea
Planning" tools have been the focus of a couple NatureServe/EBM Tools
Network projects, however, we would be interested in the Listserve's
take on key tools for land-sea processes. Specifically we are interested
in tools that assist "Integrated Land-Sea Planning" in the following areas:
*Data Collection/Management (e.g. Habitat Digitizer Extension)
*Modeling and Analysis (e.g. NSPECT, ISAT)
*Decision Support/Visualization (e.g. CoastalResilience.org toolkit,
CommunityViz, NatureServe Vista)
I realize that some tools fulfill many of these functions, so don't
worry if your tool candidate(s) don't fit neatly into these boxes. Also,
if you have specific case studies that demonstrate how the tools were
integrated with the Land-Sea Planning process, that would be very
helpful as well.
I encourage you to send your responses either through the listserve at
<mailto: >, or
directly to me at
<mailto: >. I'll compile them and send out a
summary for further comment. Eventually, we'll compile a toolkit with
downloadable fact sheets on this and other topics to provide another way
to let resource managers know about appropriate EBM tools.
Thank you for your help!
John
